As part of our continuing discussion on a naturalistic approach to the Self, we'll hear from young Harvard professor Joshua Greene on "The Neuroscience of Moral Decision-Making."
Most people are intuitive 'dualists.' We tend to think of ourselves as immaterial souls that are conjoined with material bodies, and we suppose that moral decision-making is the quintessential activity of the soul. But cutting-edge neuroscience is teaching us more and more about the way moral decision-making works in the brain. In this informal lecture Dr. Greene will talk about the implications of neuroscientific moral psychology for our thinking about morality and responsibility.
Joshua Greene is a philosopher, experimental psychologist, and neuroscientist. He is currently an Assistant Professor of Psychology at Harvard University. His primary research interest is the psychological and neuroscientific study of morality, focusing on the interplay between emotional and 'cognitive' processes in moral decision-making. He is currently writing a book about the philosophical implications of our emerging scientific understanding of morality.
